The grieving family of an East Lothian rugby legend who died suddenly last week say the number of tributes has been “breathtaking”.
Dad-of-four and grandad-of-seven John Tinlin passed away recently at the age of 57 after being diagnosed with terminal tonsil cancer in 2021, with his son saying that his death “ended any suffering he had”.
Serving as the President of Rose High Rugby Football Club, John was a hugely respected and popular member of the community, having also featured as a player for the club in his younger years.

While being a keen lover of the sport, John, from Tranent, also used rugby as a force for good - ensuring the club had strong links with the community and charities. The former gravedigger also worked for the council for more than 30 years.
Chris Tinlin, 34, John’s son, told Edinburgh Live: “He was a massive figure from when he was a gravedigger in the local community. He would always make sure the gravesides were well looked after."
Later on, when he took over the role as Ross High RFC president, he worked tirelessly to make the club not just for rugby, but a community hub for Tranent.
“He would ensure the club made regualr donations to Charites and in local business in the area," added Chris.
“As players for Ross High, myself and my brother will be forever grateful to him for introducing us to the sport and to the club itself. It has given us friends and family that can never be replaced.”
John’s standing in the community has seen an outpouring of tributes for the local stalwart. Chris said his family have been able to find comfort in these tributes, knowing that he made a mark on those around him.
He added: “It has been truly breathtaking the number of messages we have received from people from all over.
“We know that he has made such an impact on people and it shows his was a life well lived.”
Ross High RFC marked the passing of their president with a heartfelt message on social media, writing: “Ross High RFC are heartbroken to announce that Our President John Tinlin has passed away. His family were right by his side.
“John was the Rugby Club, he gave everything for this club and his legacy will continue to support this club in many years to come.
“The committee, players and fellow members are all sending our love, thoughts and condolences to the family at this time.”
John is survived by wife Gill, 55, children Chris, Nick, Louise and Jade and grandchildren Saskia, Mikayla, Layla, Maddison, Evie, Rory and Benjamin.
John’s friends and family will celebrate his life at the Rugby Club on Saturday, where his funeral will take place at 10.30am, before he is laid to rest at Tranent Cemetery at 11.45am.
Chris continued: "There is a large turn out expected on Saturday for his funeral and road closure to allow us to walk him to the cemetery."
