East Lothian librarian says it feels 'surreal' as he is named 'best in the UK'

An East Lothian school librarian has expressed his delight after being named the best in the UK.

Derek France, 46, has worked at Preston Lodge High School in Prestonpans since 2019, and has now officially been recognised as UK School Librarian of the Year.

After being nominated by his headteacher, Derek went through a rigorous selection process, before being named as the winner at a ceremony in Swindon last week.

The librarian has been praised for the inspiring initiatives he has introduced to the school, including a parent book club and a feminist group.

Derek told Edinburgh Live : “I’m honoured. It’s slightly overwhelming to be honest.

“I was absolutely shocked. It just felt surreal, I was completely bowled over. It’s great to be recognised for the work school librarians do. We’re part of the inspection process in Scotland. It feels bizarre.

“I’ve been celebrating with the students. We’re going to have a wee party with the pupil librarians now.”

Derek has inspired over 70 pupils to sign up to be school librarians, who help out with duties around the busy school space.

The school enjoyed literary success last year, as Derek lead the library to victory in First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s reading challenge.

He explained how the culture of libraries have changed, and expressed his firm belief in the power of reading despite the temptation of social media in the modern age.

He said: “We’re trying to move away from the stereotypes of school librarians just sitting behind the desk and reading all day. We do so much more.

“Students come into the library to breath. It’s a good place to be. They use the library as a safe space to come away from the hustle and bustle of daily school life.

“Part of it is getting to know the kids and building up relationships with them. And figure out their interests and what they like to watch on TV.”

According to the School Librarian Association, over three million books were lent to pupils over the last year – an average of 18 per pupil. With award in hand, Derek is primed and ready to continue to write new chapters in the stories of our young people.
