The fire service and farmer are now working together to prevent the blaze from spreading further. No casualties have been reported.
Eileen Moore, who lives nearby and saw the blaze, told us: "I was driving home from Spott Road and as I turned into Kellie Road I saw flames high above the tree line.
"I double backed (to Asda) to check what was on fire, at first I thought it might have been the local McDonald's or Pine Martin hotel on fire, the flames were high up, then I realised it must be hay bales on the other side of the A1. Looked very dramatic. Hope nobody was hurt."
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 20:40pm on Monday 8 May to reports of bales of hay being alight at Spott Road, Dunbar.
“Operations Control immediately mobilised four appliances and specialist equipment to the scene.
“Two appliances and crews remain on scene this morning to work alongside the farmer to prevent further spread of fire.
“No casualties have been reported”.
