East Lothian family's horror as motorist hits two-year-old dog before 'driving off'

An East Lothian mum has been left reeling after a driver struck her dog, before allegedly driving off.

Denise Steele, who lives in Wallyford, says her family's beloved Bonnie, a two-year-old English Bulldog, ran out of their garden on St Clements Crescent before a red Mini collided with the pup, dragging her up the road.

Despite Denise's husband shouting at the driver to stop, the family claim they kept going and left Bonnie with cuts to her face and leg. Denise's kids, aged eight and five were left screaming after witnessing the terrifying incident on Tuesday evening, April 4.

After the driver failed to stop, waitress Denise called the police who are due to visit her address to take a statement before investigating further. According to the family the 40-year-old the driver was a 'tanned male'.

Recalling the horrifying incident, Denise said: "Bonnie ran out the garden and a red Mini came up the road and hit her, dragging her up the road. The driver did not stop despite my husband shouting at them and my two kids aged five and eight screaming.

"The car just kept going so we called the police as we have the registration and we're waiting to hear back from them. My kids love playing with Bonnie and are always out in the street, cars just need to slow down coming up our street.

"She is very scared when she hears a car coming since the incident and even when we take her out in the garden she is not the same. I just keep thinking it could have been one of my kids and it could have been a lot worse.

"I understand these things happen but for the driver to not even stop was just so wrong and the screams that came from my husband and kids would definitely have alerted the driver."

Shocking images taken by Denise show several nasty cuts to Bonnie's head as well as her legs. After the incident, Denise called the local vet who came to their home and helped clean her wounds.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "On Tuesday, 4 April, 2023 we received a report that a dog had been injured by a car in the Wallyford area."
