East Lothian drive thru car wash set for former petrol station if plans approved

Plans for a drive-thru car wash just off a busy roundabout in Haddington have been lodged after the speed limit on the road was reduced to 40 miles per hour.

The proposals would see the car wash and valet service located just yards from Oak Tree junction onto the A1, in East Lothian, to the west of Gateside Retail Park.

Applicants Gleam Machine Haddington said the drive in facility on the site of a former petrol station, will operate a one way system and customers would only be able to turn left when they leave given its proximity to the junction.

They said: "A one-way system will be in operation, with entry at the eastern boundary of the site and exit to the west.

"Given the proximity of the exit to the A199 / B6471 roundabout, it will operate as a left out only."

The applicants also proposed introducing a 40mph speed limit on the road which had been a 60mph route in the past.

However the council recently introduced the lower speed limit on the road as part of its safer spaces programme which saw all town centres reduced to 20mph limits across the county.

The Oak Tree junction is a gateway into the market town of Haddington.

In their supporting statement the applicants said that with the reduced speed limit on the road they did not believe the business would have an impact on traffic.

And they said the facility could service up to eight cars an hour.

They said: "it is estimated that up to eight cars will visit the car wash facility in any one hour.

"Based on the size of the wash bays/lanes (c.15metres), it is considered that there is sufficient space to accommodate the maximum hourlydemand, without queuing onto the A199.

"In addition, valeting will be undertaken on an appointment basis, ensuring there is no queue for this element of the development proposal."

The application is available to view on the council planning portal.
