East Lothian councillors approve £40,000 bail out for leisure operator over closed pool

East Lothian sports operators Enjoy Leisure will be given £40,000 to help cover losses after one of its swimming pools was closed until further notice.

The Loch Centre swimming pool, in Tranent, closed in January for scheduled maintenance.

But building roof problems discovered during checks have meant it has stayed shut.

A meeting of East Lothian Council's cabinet this morning heard the closure had left Enjoy, which is the local authority's arms length organisation (ALEO) operating sports centres in the county, under financial pressure.

Council officers said it was still not known when the pool would reopen with options still being considered.

And members agreed to contribute £40,000 towards the loss of income it faces while the pool remains closed.

A report to councillors said: "Enjoy management have been exploring all options to mitigate the impact of this closure, including the reallocation of services to alternative locations where this is possible.

"The swimming pool and associated services remains however an important income stream for Enjoy, and therefore they remain unable to mitigate the impact of this loss of income in the short term."

The report recommended councillors approve the financial contribution even though it said it was unlikely to plug the hole left by the loss of income from the swimming pool.

It said: "It is recognised that both organisations (Enjoy and the council) continue to face significant financial challenges.

"Subject to approval, it is recognised that this contribution is unlikely to mitigate the full impact of loss of income being faced, and the on-going impact of this closure will continue to remain subject to ongoing review."
