East Lothian butchers win two gold medals at World Cup Steak Challenge

An East Lothian butcher has come away with two gold medals after entering the 2022 World Cup Steak Challenge in Dublin.

John Gilmour Butchers, who are based in Tranent, secured the top prize in both the sirloin and the ribeye categories. This made it two out of three after they also entered the fillet.

All of the cuts were from their ‘Black Gold’ range. The competition took place in the Irish Fire Steakhouse and Bar last week and saw a panel of over 60 independent judges assessing steaks from around the globe.

Entrants were judged on their quality, breed credentials and processing standards during the competition.

Dan Gilmour, co-managing director of John Gilmour Butchers, said: “We are incredibly proud to showcase the best of Scotland at the World Steak Challenge. We were up against competitors from all over the world, but our two gold medals show that Scotch beef is truly some of the best in the world.”

What makes their beef so special is believed to be the fact that it is hung for a minimum of 60 days in a Himalayan salt chamber.

Simon Gilmour, who is also the co-managing director of John Gilmour Butchers said: ‘We are of course delighted at this recognition, but even more delighted at what this means for Scottish farming. We truly believe that our partner farms produce the best that Scotland has to offer, and seeing it winning awards on a world stage just shows what we have on our doorstep, the Wood family at Garson farms are an excellent example of this.”

The John Gilmour Butchers Black Gold range is predominantly made up of Aberdeen Angus; Britain’s favourite breed but is equally revered in steak cutting traditions across the globe. Its huge popularity is directly linked to the marbling that evenly runs through the meat, to give the beef its renowned rich and indulgent flavour.

The Black Gold Range has also won ‘Scotch Brand Product of the Year’ at the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards earlier in September.
