East Lothian biker thanks good samaritans after crash with deer at BP garage

Colin Rintoul was heading out on Saturday for a game of golf but got a massive shock when his motorbike collided with a deer on the road throwing him off the bike.

Luckily the 53-year-old was just left with a fright and some scrapes and bruised knees.

He put the bike safely by the side of the road and was given a lift home by passing police but when he returned to the scene hours later to retrieve his motorcycle - it was gone.

After being thrown off his bike and missing a good game of golf Colin could not believe that someone had stolen his beloved bike before he could take it home.

The NHS worker took to Facebook to share the unlucky day he was having and thank those who came to the biker's aid writing: "Just a big thank you to people who help me after I hit deer on my motorbike at the BP garage, just to let you know I'm fine sore knees,

"But someone has stolen the bike before I could recover the bike."

Many offered their condolences and were shocked at the eventful day Colin had experienced, Daniel Hynd exclaimed: "Someone stole your bike? That's absolutely mental mate!

"Absolute scum bags stealing a bike from someone who's just had a crash!"

Gareth Taylor exclaimed: "Clearly was not your day!"

While Anne Maxwell added: "What low life would do that. I hope you get it back! Glad you’re ok."

Colin is unsure if his £2000 bike is fixable.

Colin later found out that it was actually East Lothian Council who removed the bike from the road as it was leaking oil as a safety precaution.

Its thought someone may have tried to steal the bike but left it after they realised it wasn't in the best nick.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live he said: "It happened between BP Musselburgh services and old Craighall roundabout just of the A1, was on my way to play golf at Liberton golf club.

"It was the only time never I wore my protective trousers, had my bike jacket on, my trousers were ripped to shreds, my jacket saved the rest of body.

"I'm just glad I wasn't going fast, would have been a lot worseI

"I got a lift home from the police, sorted out my insurance for them to pick up the bike, went a couple of hours later as they were asking for pictures and the bike was gone, not by the recovery vehicle.

"I was just coming round the bend at corner of the service station when the next thing I knew I was sliding along the ground with the bike.

"The deer came out no where, people stop to help, which was a bonus, the police were passing, made sure I was ok, just sore knees and shoulder.

"We both put the bike against the fence he took details of what happened, took me home.

"I sorted out the insurance to pick up the bike, went back down to take some photos for the Insurance a couple of hours later, the bike was gone.

"The bike was £2000, I don't know yet if it's fixable.

"I will have to get in contact with the council tomorrow, that's the end of bikes for me."
