East Lothian beauty spot burnt out after firework destroys sand dunes

An East Lothian beauty spot has been left tarnished after a fire destroyed a huge section of it following a rogue firework.

Local countryside rangers in the Whitesands area took to social media this week to remind locals that the area should be preserved and taken care of after they discovered the blaze.

Although mostly burnt out by Tuesday, November 15, a large section of the dunes had been completely burnt out, with the long grasses turned to ash.

Investigating the fire, rangers said they had discovered what appeared to be the remnants of a firework, and urged residents to be aware of the wildlife living in the area.

Located near Dunbar, the beach and surrounding pathways are a popular spot for locals and tourists who wish to enjoy the coastline.

Speaking on social media, the East Lothian Rangers said: "We were sad to discover the remains of a fire in the dunes at Whitesands, which appears to have been started by a firework.

"Dunes are highly diverse environments, home to a variety of plants and insects as well as ground nesting birds in the spring/summer. It just shows that even in November there is still a high risk of fire, a reminder to #RespectProtectEnjoy."
