East Londonderry NI election results as Claire Sugden becomes first Independent elected three times

East Londonderry has proved to be DUP-dominant over the years - with the party winning two seats here in the last Assembly election in 2017 - and they maintained that with the return of two MLAs.

DUP's Maurice Bradley was the first to be elected at stage 6 late on Friday night - with 7401 total votes.

Alan Robinson stood proudly alongside Bradley as he took the seat vacated by father George - returning the DUP's second and final seat in the constituency with 7394 votes on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein's Caoimhe Archibald was forced to wait until the 10th count until she was elected.

The largely rural community, which spans from the edges of Derry City to the Sperrins, also has a large affinity with independent candidates.

And it paid dividends for Independent candidate Claire Sugden who also got elected on the 10th count.

Ms Sugden's election means she is the first Independent candidate to be elected three times in the constituency.

Speaking after the count, Ms Sugden said: "I am very proud to have been elected and I hope that my election encourages more women to stand in the future."

Despite suffering countless hammer blows across the country, SDLP will be happy with the performance of one of their brightest talents, Cara Hunter.

Elected on the 11th count, Ms Hunter took the final seat.

The overall turnout for the East Londonderry constituency was 61.40%% - in numbers, there were a total of 72,959 eligible to vote in this constituency and of that total, 44.674 voted. In 2017, the turnout for the vote was 62.7%.
