East Kilbride Thistle must stop giving themselves mountains to climb, says boss after yet another battling comeback

Aaron Connolly says his East Kilbride Thistle side must stop giving themselves mountains to climb if they are to stay out of the relegation mix in the West of Scotland Third Division.

The Jags boss watched his side fall 2-0 behind by half-time away to Finnart on Saturday, but goals from Simon Millar and Lewis Archer after the break earned a precious point and lifted them up the table one place to 11th.

They do, however, sit just two points above the drop zone in the division with eight games to cram in before the end of the month.

And Connolly said: “We’ve come back a few times over the season and that character doesn’t happen by chance, but we really need to get a handle on games and score when we are in top.

“If we keep on persevering, hopefully that starts to turn.

“It was a good game. Both teams went for it. I thought we dominated 70 out of the 90 minutes. In the first half hour we were really on top and didn’t take our chances, then a really poor 15 minutes saw us concede two sloppy goals.

“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb once again but I can’t question the character and resilience of the boys to come out after half-time and get the two goals back. The last five minutes we were chasing a winner and we are probably disappointed to come away with a draw in the end.”

Thistle now have two massive home games this week as they host Lesmahagow tonight (Wednesday) and Irvine Vics on Saturday.

Connolly added: “The big games just keep on coming and every game is big between now and the end of the season.

“We just need to keep putting in the performances and hope we can pick up a few wins. We’ve been a bit unfortunate not to win a few games recently so hopefully our luck will change a bit.”
