East Kilbride Rugby Club coach Craig Brown compares his side’s progress to perfecting a golf swing.
And he says once EK are comfortable with how much they’ve perfected their basic play, fans will really see them go in West League 1.
Despite a 27-22 opening day defeat at home to Annan, Brown said there were signs that his side will really start to play some good stuff in time.
“The way I word it with the guys is that essentially what we’re doing is changing our golf swing, and you just need reps and time to develop it,” he said.
“Some people pick it up quicker than others, some need more time and more reps, and that’s where we’re at.
“It’s still very early on.
“Although we obviously want results I think the focus has to be progress and for us to be moving forward.
“That was definitely another big step forward in our performance from the previous games, so I’m really quite happy with that.
“The first half was quite tight, we swapped leads a couple of times, and then they had two rather quick tries in succession.
“We had a couple of decisions that didn’t go our way but it’s the nature of the beast. We bounced back, we fired in two tries in five minutes towards the end.
“We can see that the potential is there for us to really perform quite well at this level, so that was really encouraging.”
Brown added: “We just have to hack away at it until it becomes second nature, and when we do that and can focus on the style of play, that’s going to make a massive difference to the performance of the team.
“Once we’re confident in that, that’s when you’ll really get to express ourselves and do a lot more creative stuff.
“There were brilliant individual moments across the team and it has just been great.
“It was a really good performance and I was really happy with it.
“I was speaking to some of the guys afterwards and there was the right level of frustration amongst themselves, which means they know they can do better, but they now it is coming, that they can see how it can be.
“Likewise, fans I was speaking to said they can see what we’re trying to do, and it will be good when it actually lands.”
East Kilbride travel to Garnock on Saturday and Brown expects to see more progress in his side.
He said: “I think it will be a similar game. Garnock provides a little bit more up front than some of the other teams within the league.
“We’ll need to focus on how we play our shape, expect that style of play, but we’re looking forward to that one.
“It’s a different test, the guys are already past this game and it should be good fun, so we’ll start to look forward to that.”
