East Kilbride Rugby Club boss Craig Brown was left scratching his head as to how they lost 14-7 to Kilmarnock in Tennent’s West League 1 on Saturday, but says he’s not giving up on his third-placed target.
Brown admits the result frustrated and hurt him, and is one they should have taken the points from.
But he says a return to form at second-bottom Ardrossan Accies can spark a surge up the league table, and with games in hand over several rivals, they can land in at least fourth place.
Brown said: “I’m trying to figure it out. I think we were just off. Our pass accuracy wasn’t fantastic and if that isn’t great it takes the speed out of your attack. We just didn’t hit the right points.
“The guys were getting the ball and under pressure they were having to do something they hadn’t planned on doing, so that added a bit of chaos, but the wrong type of chaos.
“Defensively the guys were great. Kilmarnock did really well, it takes two to tango, but that’s a bit of a sore one. It feels like that’s one we should have come away with the points from.”
On the challenge of Ardrossan and climbing up the league, Brown said: “We’re not out of the race for anything, really. We’ve always wanted to be challenging for fourth, and we think we should do that this season.
“Really what we’re going for is third, but that will take a couple of points to go our way now.
“But for a first season it has been good – it has been a complete change of training staff, new ways of training, a new style of play, and considering all that change, I think the guys are adapting quite well.”
