East Kilbride charities receive cash boost from fire station plant sale fundraiser

A host of East Kilbride charities and community groups have been given a cash boost by East Kilbride Fire Station.

Their popular annual charity plant sale attracted hundreds of green-fingered locals last month with a wide selection of plants.

Running for over 30 years and returning after a two-year hiatus following the pandemic, the popular local fundraiser raised an incredible £3486.

The local crew split half of the fund between Loaves and Fishes, St Andrew's First Aid, East Kilbride Sea Cadets, East Kilbride Men's Shed and St Vincent de Paul Society with each organisation receiving £250.

The other half of the funds will go to the National Fire Fighters Charity (formerly the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund).

The recipients were presented with the donation at the fire station on June 21 where they told firefighters all about the good work that they do.

Crew Commander Matthew Smith told Lanarkshire Live : "It was great to meet the charities and hear of the work they carry out to help the local community.

"We would love to help all the charities but unfortunately can't do this.

"We are looking forward to next year's plant sale to be able to help other charities within our community."

Commenting on the cash injection, Loaves & Fishes posted on their Facebook page: "We were delighted to be chosen as one of the lucky charities and received a fabulous £250 donation.

"We were all invited to the station on Tuesday evening… we had tea, cake and the sun shone.

"The plan is to use this money to provide fresh fruit for our families over the next couple of weeks.

"We are so lucky in East Kilbride that our fire station is so community focused and supportive of local charities.

"Thanks so much lads, we appreciate you so much!"
