East Kilbride boxer David Jamieson pulls out of Hydro title fight after dog bite

East Kilbride boxer David Jamieson has been forced to pull out of his IBO Intercontinental title defence at the Hydro on May 13 after being biten by a dog.

The 30-year-old was due to lock horns with Dec Spelman on the undercard for Hannah Rankin’s double world title defence at the Glasgow venue, but he says he had no option but to pull out just over a week before the bout after a dog bite he sustained appears to have become infected.

But he insists he won't be shirking the challenge and vowed to get the fight reschedule when he has healed up.

Announcing his withdrawal on his Facebook page, Jamieson posted: "I’m sorry to confirm that I've had to withdraw from my IBO International title defence at The OVO Hydro next week.

"I’ve sustained an injury to my left hand and wrist after quite a bad dog bite. The injury is now showing signs of infection, I will spare you the details.

"On the advice of medical professionals and after some careful consideration, I have been left with no choice but to postpone the fight.

"I have too much respect for Dec Spelman, as well as everyone who has dug into their pockets to buy tickets, to not turn up at my best and give 100 per cent.

"I’ve been assured that the fight will be rescheduled in the near future so I will work around the injury and stay in the gym until my hand has healed.

"Apologies to Dec and his team for the inconvenience, but I'm sure they will agree that there should be no excuses going into a fight of this magnitude from either side.

"I would like to thank all of my sponsors for their continued support and everyone who gets behind me every time I step through the ropes.

"This is just a temporary setback. We will be back real soon!!"
