The chief executive of South Lanarkshire Council has given East Kilbride the accolade of a Scottish “success story” in its anniversary year.
Celebrating the milestone of 75 years since it was granted new town status, Cleland Sneddon has highlighted the town’s importance nationally and its contribution to the country as a whole.
Mr Sneddon told Lanarkshire Live : “The growth of East Kilbride is a real Scottish success story.
“It was, of course, the first new town in the country, but I think it is also fair to say it is also the one that has done most to benefit the national economy and culture – punching above its weight in so many important sectors.
“As such it is only right that the 75th anniversary of East Kilbride being designated as a new town is marked and celebrated.
“SLC is pleased to be at the heart of that, and we recently undertook a public consultation exercise asking local people what should be done.
“More than 1000 people gave us their views, which is a demonstration of the passion for, and interest in, the town among local residents.
“There was a real range in the things that people suggested might be done, from galas and street parties, to different types of art works and events.
"The council will now look to support community groups to take some of these forward, including through community grants which can be applied for to help fund the activities.
“The aim is to make this landmark year for East Kilbride as fun and memorable as possible, and I would encourage everyone to join in.”
