A 72-year-old East Gippsland man has survived a 30-metre crash-landing after his paraglider's engine failed.
The Eagle Point man landed the ultralight vehicle in Lake King, in the Gippsland Lakes system, where nearby kayakers picked him up.
"He wasn't actually injured, believe it or not," said Victoria Police Inspector Mark Edwards.
"They got him to shore and then the Gippsland Water Police turned up a little bit later and helped retrieve the paraglider."
Inspector Edwards said the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has been investigating the incident.
"The ATSB are having a bit of a look into that to make sure everything is above board, but it just appears like it was engine failure and nothing untoward," he said.
But Inspector Edwards says licensing requirements for paragliders are strict.
"You can't just knock up something extravagant in your shed and go for a bit of a blast. There are some pretty strict rules that cover that sort of stuff," he said.
"He was very, very lucky, if he hit the ground it might've been a completely different story."
