East Fife launch racism probe after Albion Rovers player targeted in League Two clash

East Fife have launched a racism investigation after an Albion Rovers player was allegedly targeted by a member of their support in Saturday's League Two clash.

Rovers took the lead in the match after 35 minutes through Dundee loanee Euan Mutale, but the hosts ran out 2-1 winners in the end at Bayview after goals from Jack Healy just before half-time and Alexander Ferguson in 64 minutes.

A statement released by the East Fife Board of Directors on Sunday night confirmed the comment directed at the Rovers player came from "the home support area" during the first half of the match, and they are now asking fans with any information to come forward, as they review CCTV footage.

Their statement read: "As announced at half time during yesterday’s game against Albion Rovers, the club has been made aware of alleged racist abuse directed towards an Albion Rovers player from the home support area.

"East Fife Football Club are carrying out a full investigation into this incident and encourage anyone who may have any information to please get in contact the club.

"We are currently reviewing all CCTV footage and the club will take appropriate action against any individual or individuals found to be involved.

"We are an all-inclusive club and incidents such as this will not be tolerated."

Those with information on the incident are asked to email office@eastfife.info or call 01333 426323.

Rovers also released a statement, which read: "Albion Rovers Football Club are aware of an alleged racist comment directed towards one of our players during Saturday afternoon’s cinch League 2 match at the MGM Timber Bayview Stadium.

"Albion Rovers Football Club finds any form of discriminatory behaviour totally abhorrent. It has no place at Albion Rovers or in any of our communities.

"Racist and discriminatory behaviour towards any player, official, staff member or supporter is completely unacceptable.

"We are grateful to East Fife Football Club for their swift action during Saturday’s match.

"They are conducting an investigation and are asking for anyone with any information to come forward."

Rovers are currently bottom of the table in League Two and go into their final match this weekend looking for a win and results to go their way elsewhere for the club to avoid a relegation play-off.
