East Belfast fancy dress fundraiser tops London half marathon donation table

An East Belfast man has topped the donation charts for the London Half Marathon this year as he raises thousands for charity.

Alan Harris is preparing to take on the half marathon, dressed as a gorilla, at the beginning of April and has been fundraising all over Belfast in a variety of fancy dress costumes in order to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Since September, he has raised more than £22,000 for the charity and has raised over £55,000 since 2019.

Alan originally started his fundraising journey in memory of his parents, Alan and Helen, who died following a battle with cancer.

He is currently top of the fundraising charts for the half marathon on April 2 and has thanked everyone who has supported him so far.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Alan said: "I am always doing things throughout the year in order to try and raise some funds for Macmillan because of the great work that they do and I know first hand the support that they provide.

"I have been setting up stalls at different locations throuhgout Belfast over the past few months in order to gather donations for the charity and I am very thankful to everyone who has supported me so far.

"I will be running the marathon in a gorilla suit, which is something that I have done a few times now so I am quite used to it, but it can still be quite tough to do, but all worth it in the end knowing that all of the money that has been raised is going towards a really great cause."
