Ayrshire teachers' strike - all you need to know about key dates and closures

A planned walkout from teachers in Ayrshire next month has prompted two local authorities to issue written guidance to those who will be affected.

Teachers across the authority are preparing to go on strike over pay during three dates next month.

As a result, the walkouts will have an impact on children going to school - and on childcare arrangements.

South Ayrshire primary & special school closures Tues 10 Jan 2023

As a result of industrial action all South Ayrshire Council run primary schools and special schools will be fully closed on Tuesday, Janunary 10 2023. Any families with children that normally receive a free school meal, will be able to collect a packed lunch from their nearest primary school. Five Early Years Centres will remain open (Cherry Tree, Girvan, Prestwick North, Space Place, Wallacetown). All SAC primary schools and special schools will reopen as normal on Wednesday, January 11 2023.

South Ayrshire secondary school closures Wed 11 Jan 2023
As a result of industrial action all Council secondary schools will be fully closed on Wednesday, January 11 2023. Any families with young people that normally receive a free school meal, will receive a payment for every eligible pupil. All SAC secondary schools will reopen as normal Thursday, January 12 2023.

For East Ayrshire, a letter has been issued to parents and carers by Linda McAulay-Griffiths, chief education officer and head of education.

In the letter Ms McAulay-Griffiths details the schools and Early Childhood Centres that will be affected by the announcement of discontinuous industrial action by four teaching trade unions.

The key dates are on Tuesday, January 10, Wednesday, January 11, and Monday, January 23, 2023.

*Tuesday, January 10- Facilities CLOSED to pupils - all primary schools and primary Supported Learning Centres, Crosshouse Communication Centre, Park School, Willowbank School and Hillside School.

Facilities OPEN as normal - all secondary schools and secondary Supported Learning Centres, Loudoun Communication Centre and all Early Childhood Centres.

*Wednesday, January 11- Facilities CLOSED to pupils - all secondary schools and secondary Supported Learning Centres and Loudoun Communication Centre.

Facilities OPEN as normal - all primary schools and primary Supported Learning Centres, Crosshouse Communication Centre, Park School, Willowbank School, Hillside School and all Early Childhood Centres.

*Monday, January 23- Facilities CLOSED to pupils - all schools.

Facilities OPEN as normal - all Early Childhood Centres

*Free school meal arrangements- ‘Grab and go’ lunches will be available for collection from schools the day before they are closed to pupils.
