East Ayrshire's 'oldest resident' dies at 106 as family pay loving tribute to Winnie Campbell

Tributes have poured in for Winnie Campbell who has passed away at the age of 106.

Winnie, believed to be East Ayrshire's oldest resident, died peacefully at Kilmarnock's Springhill care home on Monday, February 28.

She had celebrated her 106th birthday on January 5 by receiving her seventh card from Her Majesty the Queen.

Granddaughter Susan McCreadie said: "It is with a heavy heart that our family would like to let friends and neighbours of my gran Winnie Campbell know of her peaceful but sudden passing at the grand old age of 106.

"She was apparently East Ayrshire's oldest resident, so we have been told.

"She was a well-known face in Shortlees where she had lived in the same house in Langside Avenue for over 70 years until just a couple of years ago when she had to go into a nursing home.

"Rest in peace Gran, you will be sadly missed."

Winnie Campell (nee Orr) was born to Harriet and Robert in the town's Bonnyton area in 1916.

In 1940, Winnie, then aged 24, married the love of her life, William, and the pair went on to have four sons.

Her first job was for Western SMT before she became an assistant cook at Park Primary School.

Winnie was a huge Kilmarnock FC fan and even celebrated her 100th birthday at Rugby Park.

Louise Saunders, senior care assistant at Springhill care home, added: “Winnie was one of a kind.

"She was a kind, inspirational and loving woman who loved a cuddle and would always seem to know when you needed one the most.

"Her favourite activity was playing dominos; you would find her every day playing with her fellow dominos players. She loved her treats but crisps and cakes were her favourites.

"To reach the age of 106 and still have a great joy and passion for life like she did, it was truly amazing to see.

"She will be sorely missed by everyone in the home from her friends to staff. There will never be another Winnie.”

Winnie's funeral will be held on Friday, March 11 in Kilmarnock at 118 John Finnie Street, Co-op funeral care, from 1pm. Following the service, the burial will take place at Riccarton Cemetery.

A spokeswoman for the care home added: "Anyone who knew Winnie is welcome to come and pay their final respects to her."
