East Ayrshire named joint 'obesity capital of Scotland' with grim numbers revealed

East Ayrshire has been given the unwelcome title of the joint obesity capital of Scotland.

The council area has topped the charts with grim statistics revealing that 75 per cent of adults in East Ayrshire are obese.

East Ayrshire has tied with Orkney where 75 per cent of adults are also considered obese.

The researched carried out by Now Patient sought to understand the soaring obesity levels in the UK amidst scores of people seeking weight busting drugs.

Their data has laid bare the worst areas across the country with East Ayrshire joining, Thurock in England where 76.3 per cent of adults are overweight and Blaenau Gwent in Wales where a whopping 80 per of adults are considered obese.

Data has also revealed the top 10 areas of Scotland with high levels of obesity.

And North Ayrshire worryingly makes the list, with the neighbouring council area sitting 8th of the overall leader board with 70 per of cent of adult residents classified as obese.

In comparison Edinburgh has proved to the healthiest area when it comes to weight, with just 53 per of adults in the capital considered overweight. Glasgow is the second best city with just 63 per cent of adults struggling with their weight.

Researchers say that despite East Ayrshire being named as the obesity capital of Scotland, the area still boasts a high number of sporting and leisure activities, including an athletics arena.
