Councillor couple Linda Holland and Peter Mabon celebrated their first-time elections – just over a month before their very own match of the day.
The loved-up Labour duo from Kilmarnock were among 32 councillors elected to the new administration at East Ayrshire on Friday, May 6.
NHS IT systems administrator Ms Holland won the faith of voters in Ballochmyle while Mahle engine systems factory worker Mr Mabon secured a seat in Kilmarnock South.
Now they will count down to their big day on Saturday, June 18, when they tie the knot at Kilmarnock’s plush Park Hotel.
“It feels really strange to be both elected as councillors,” Ms Holland, 50, told the Kilmarnock Standard. “If you’d said to me a year ago this is where we’d both be standing, I’d have never believed you."
Mr Mabon, 56, joked that politics has dominated the conversations at home for “the last four months” and said: “We’ll both be able to understand the stresses and strains of being a councillor. We’re both brand new to it.”
There was little respite for the couple who organised last Saturday’s New Farm Loch gala as their swansong to the area’s community council.
Mr Mabon was chair while Ms Holland was secretary with the duo required to stand down in order to take up their new positions at East Ayrshire Council's London Road headquarters.
