Earth Hour 2022: Here’s how Dubliners can participate and switch off

We're always glued to our phones and depending on technology, so why don't we take a break from all the craziness tonight?

Dubliners and everyone in the World is welcome to participate and switch off for Earth Hour 2022.

People are encouraged to come together at 8:30pm to take care of each other and the one home we all share as part of this campaign.

Tonight is the fifteenth year of Earth Hour and people around the world will turn off their lights for the hour.

The annual tradition started by the World Wildlife Fund back in 2007 in Australia as a way to raise climate change awareness.

WWF describes the annual campaign as a symbol of "unity" and "hope", they added: "Earth Hour aims to increase awareness and spark global conversations on protecting nature, tackling the climate crisis, and working together to shape a brighter future for us all."

How can I participate?

You can celebrate Earth Hour by switching off your lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm wherever you are in the world.

Those at Earth Hour recommend these seven ways that supporters can spend the hour, including reconnecting with nature and attending local Earth Hour events.

The WWF also suggests to “take action beyond the hour, whether it is supporting a local WWF project or getting involved in Earth Hour campaigns in their own country, or starting the movement in their own community.”

Easy Treesie, an Irish NGO who are planting one million trees with Ireland's school children by 2023 for the UNESCO Global Climate Action goal of the Trillion Tree Project are getting involved.

They said: “We’ll be doing ‘Tree Minutes’ in our lead up to the last day of our National Tree Week where we will try to break our record of 53 in one minute.

“We will publish the results of our competition on our website as Earth Hour begins on this page.

“Our volunteers dig the holes for our participating tree planting children; then the children plant the trees with the timer set for one minute!”
