Earth Day: How to clean up space junk - Tech & Science Daily podcast

On Earth Day 2024, instead of focusing on our oceans, mountains and forests, we’re being asked to turn our attention to the sky above us, and the tonnes of space debris threatening our satellites.

According to Astroscale, a company planning to use robotics to clean up the space junk in orbit, the UK economy would lose £7.6 billion if satellite navigation services went down for just a week.

MD of Astroscale Nick Shave tells Tech & Science Daily just how severe the space debris problem is, and how they plan to use robotics to fix the problem.

A UK astronaut trainee has graduated from a European Space Agency programme, on Earth Day.

UK astronaut Rosemary Coogan has been through a two-year orientation process, learning about the international space station and the scientific experiments they carry out in orbit.

She has also undergone various practical training such as scuba diving and centrifuge rides.

Libby Jackson, the UK Space Agency’s head of space exploration explains why now is an exciting time for Rosemary to graduate, and reveals what most astronauts say about their experiences of space.

Taylor Swift has made Spotify history, as her newest album was streamed more than 300 million times in one day.

The streaming service said the US singer became the most-streamed artist in a single day on the platform when her record was released on April 19.

The Tortured Poets Department is Swift’s 11th studio album, and includes collaborations with Florence And The Machine and Post Malone.

TikTok has moved yet another step closer to being banned in the United States.

It’s after the House of Representatives voted in support of a measure, calling for a ban on the social media app, if its Chinese owner ByteDance doesn't sell its stake.

The legislation will next go to the US Senate on Tuesday 23rd April, where it is expected to be passed.

If the bill becomes law, the TikTok owner will have nine months to find a buyer, and if it fails, the app will be banned in the US.
