Earth bunds to be built at park to stop illegal traveller camps

Large earth bunds are to be created at a Portishead park – to stop illegal traveller encampments.

The earth mounds are to be put along the entrance to Merlin Park after travellers parked up at the site this summer.

A group of 10 caravans arrived at the park – a popular spot with local families – in August and stayed for around a week.

The group damaged fencing and left the area strewn with rubbish and human faeces.

The encampment meant the park was out of bounds to local families, walkers and young people who visit to use the skate park.

Portishead Town Council has now been working with North Somerset Council to look at ways of preventing further illegal encampments.

Plans have been drawn up to build large earth bunds along the frontage of the park to prevent vehicles and caravans from driving onto the land.

It is hoped that the work will be carried out by next Spring when travelling groups are on the move.

Portishead Town Council chairman Councillor Paul Gardner said: “The travellers left a lot of mess behind them, including human faeces, and damaged fencing.

“They arrived in the school holidays which is a time when the park is used a lot by local families.

“The fact they were on the site meant that the park could not be used and it caused a lot of disruption.

“We have been working with North Somerset Council to look at ways to prevent further encampments and a plan to create contoured earth bunds along the front of the site has been put forward.

“These will make it extremely difficult for vehicles to get onto the land.

“The fact that Merlin Park has been used by travellers is likely to mean it has been identified as a potential site and we need to do what we can to prevent further encampments.”

What are the rights of travellers?

There were three illegal traveller encampments, including Merlin Park, in Portishead over the summer.

Groups also parked up on an industrial estate off Serbert Way and at Kilkenny Fields.

Other parts of North Somerset also saw several illegal camps – the worst hit being Weston-super-Mare.

North Somerset Council officers were forced to play cat and mouse with various groups parking up on sports fields, open spaces and the Beach Lawns on Weston seafront.

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.
