Former President Donald Trump has begun his campaign trail in battleground North Carolina as early voting numbers in the state have surpassed one million, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
Of the total early votes, nearly 940,000 were cast in person, while approximately 92,000 were submitted by mail. This marks a significant decrease of almost 40% in early voting turnout compared to the same period in 2020.
Breaking down the early voting demographics, Democrats make up 35% of the early votes, closely followed by Republicans at 33%, and unaffiliated voters at 31%. In contrast, four years ago, Democrats held a larger share of early votes at 44%, with unaffiliated voters at 31% and Republicans at 24%, as reported by Catalist.
Nationally, the trend of early voting is also evident, with over 13.5 million pre-election ballots already cast as of Monday morning.
