Early voting gets good marks overall from a group of Lexington voters

Early Voting at UK's Kroger Field (Stu Johnson / )

Day one of early Primary voting in Lexington took place at UK’s Kroger Field Thursday. Around noontime, it was a steady stream of voters entering the complex.

For some voters like Anthony Everett, it’s a particular concern that’s a driver to vote.

“The issue of mass incarceration is a major problem in Kentucky and in the United States,” said Everett.

Tom Seeley says the voting process went well, but he was disappointed he wasn’t eligible for a mail in absentee ballot as he was in the last election. He views that as an intentional act to make voting more difficult.

Voting is being done through the paper ballot, something Catherine Kenneally thinks works well.

“I think the paper is fine. It probably is a lot more user-friendly for all ages,” said Kenneally.

There are 24 privacy booths, ten check-in clerks, and two scanners at the voting location at the football stadium. Overall, these reviews about early voting in Lexington were positive.

“Oh, it was great…it was very easy…it was convenient…it went very quickly..there were not holdups”

“I think anything that encourages people, more people to vote so I wanted to support the early voting and get out here and make sure I got it done.”

“I’m going out of town beginning Tuesday so I was going to miss the date and I just realized it, so this was very good, I wanted to vote.”

Those were Fayette County voters Donna Engle, Lisa Thompson, and Patricia Clark. Early voting continues Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 4:30 each day. The three days of early in-person voting will become a Bluegrass State staple following the passage of a bipartisan measure in 2021.
