Early in-person voting has commenced in North Carolina, a crucial battleground state in the upcoming presidential election. Despite the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which caused extensive damage and left many without basic necessities like power and clean water, over 400 voting locations across all 100 counties opened their doors for the 17-day early voting period. Only four sites in the 25 hardest-hit western counties remained closed.
The State Board of Elections Executive Director commended the resilience of emergency management officials, utilities, and election workers for ensuring the smooth operation of the voting sites. The storm, which hit the Southeast three weeks ago, resulted in significant devastation, claiming lives and disrupting communities.
Early in-person voting has been a popular choice in North Carolina, with a majority of ballots cast through this method in previous elections. The option to vote early not only provides convenience but also allows for same-day voter registration.
Additionally, absentee voting has been underway for several weeks, with a substantial number of completed ballots already returned. Displaced individuals are permitted to drop off their absentee ballots at any early voting location in the state.
The presidential campaigns have also recognized the significance of early voting, with campaign events scheduled in various parts of the state. The North Carolina ballot features races for governor, attorney general, U.S. House seats, and General Assembly positions.
County election boards have been granted flexibility to adjust early voting sites and hours to accommodate voters. Despite the challenges posed by the recent storm, election officials have worked diligently to ensure a smooth voting process.
As North Carolina implements photo identification requirements for the first time in a presidential election, provisions have been made for individuals who have lost their IDs due to the storm.
