Eamonn Murray departs Meath ladies job having guided them to back-to-back All-Irelands

Eamonn Murray has opted to resign from his role as Meath ladies manager.

He leaves at the very top of the game having guided them to another All-Ireland senior title last month when they dispatched of Kerry by 3-10 to 1-7.

Under his stewardship, The Royals enjoyed a fairytale rise through the divisions having only won the intermediate crown in 2020.

Next year was always going to represent a bit of a sea change for them though with star pair Vikki Wall and Orlagh Lally departing Ireland for the AFLW even though they haven't closed the door on wearing the green and gold in 2023.

Emma Troy is also going travelling.

Murray's decision doesn't come as a complete shock when you consider his wistful comments in the immediate aftermath of last month's final.

Asked why he was so emotional after the Croke Park decider, Murray replied: "Yeah you have to get that losing players and stuff.

"You’re probably good enough to win three or four in a row, but we won't...but we’ll worry about that next week.

"They have two All-Irelands in their pocket. They will go pride and their heads up, and we wish them luck.

"And we look forward to them coming back, and they will be back. I know they will.

"But they're a very special bunch - and it takes a very special bunch to go two in a row."

He added: "We started the year quietly, won the league without playing well but we were getting better and better.

"But we kept the best ‘til last today - and it’s good the players didn't have us sweating at the end!

"Look at that crowd we had today by God, it's worthwhile doing it for them alone."
