Eamonn Holmes pays tribute to his dad on 31st anniversary of his 'sudden death'

Eamonn Holmes has paid tribute to his father on the anniversary of his "sudden death."

The Belfast man's father, Leonard, suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 65, while driving home from a trip to his caravan in Ballycastle with his wife Josephine and son Conor on April 4, 1991.

Eamonn was not present at the time of his father's death as he was in London.

Taking to Instagram, the presenter paid tribute to his dad the day before the 31st anniversary of his death. He said: "We lost Daddy without warning 31 years ago tomorrow.

"A Great character, a model Father and a kind man. Happy to say he lives on in his 5 Sons. RIP Leonard Holmes . Never forgotten."

Fans were quick to flood the comments section with messages of support, with one person writing: "Sending hugs and as you say he lives on in your family," while another added: "Sending love to you and your family Eamonn."

Another fan sent their condolences, writing: "So sorry Eamonn. Grief never goes away completely. Sending prayers and love."

Eamonn recently gave a heartfelt interview about his father's death on RTE One's The Meaning of Life.

Reflecting on his upbringing, the broadcaster revealed he once feared for his own life after he found himself struggling to breathe a few weeks after his father's death.

"One time I was in Israel and I began to feel ill," he explained. "My heart started beating and I was losing my breath. I was becoming really dizzy and I fell down on my knees.

"I thought I was going to die the way my dad died. My dad had just died six weeks earlier. I passed out and the next thing I knew I was in the back of an ambulance. It actually makes me nervous thinking about it now."
