Eamonn Holmes Blasts PM’s Defence Plans: ‘A Betrayal!’

Eamonn Holmes didn’t hold back on GB News as he slammed the Prime Minister’s latest announcement to increase defence spending by cutting foreign aid.

During Wednesday morning’s broadcast (February 26), Eamonn, 65, was back in the GB News studio alongside co-host Ellie Costello, waking up viewers with the biggest headlines of the day. But it was Keir Starmer’s controversial funding decision that really got the veteran broadcaster fired up.

The Prime Minister revealed plans to slash the UK’s overseas aid budget to boost defence spending over the next two years. The move has sparked a major backlash, with development charities branding it a ‘betrayal’, while it’s reportedly been welcomed by the Trump administration.

Discussing the issue live on air, Eamonn didn’t hide his disappointment, making it clear he wasn’t on board with the decision. He criticised the PM’s priorities and questioned the impact the cuts would have on those relying on UK aid.

Starmer is expected to face tough questioning from MPs in the House of Commons today before flying to the US, where Ukraine is set to be a key focus of discussions.

Elsewhere in the show, Eamonn and Ellie also covered other major stories, including BP scaling back its renewable energy investments and reports that Ukraine and the US are working on a crucial mineral deal.

But it was the government’s defence spending shake-up that dominated the debate, with many questioning whether cutting aid is the right way to fund it.

Eamonn, a father of four, has never been one to shy away from political discussions, and this time was no different. His blunt take on the PM’s decision certainly set the tone for the discussion, and with Starmer heading to the US, all eyes will be on how this controversial move plays out on the world stage.
