Eamonn Holmes Admits He Felt ‘Useless’ Growing Up as Mum Did Everything

Image: GB NEWS)

Eamonn Holmes has opened up about a personal regret from his childhood, admitting he feels a sense of “shame” over how little he helped around the house while his mum worked tirelessly to keep their home spotless.

The GB News Breakfast presenter, 65, shared the emotional reflection during a segment on whether it’s cruel to make kids do household chores. Reflecting on his late mother Josephine, who passed away in 2022 aged 93, Eamonn said she “worked like a slave” while raising five boys, including his father, reported the Express.

“My mother kept the most beautiful home spotless,” he said. “But there were four boys, five boys including my dad. She worked like a slave, didn’t she? That’s what she did, and I feel quite ashamed of it, that really. I’ve grown up being rather useless, because basically she just cleaned around. She did everything — cooked, cleaned, washed up.”

Eamonn admitted that his lack of involvement back then has stuck with him, especially now as he reflects on the amount his mother took on without complaint. His honesty sparked a wave of support from viewers who related to growing up in households where the mother figure was the one constantly holding everything together.

He did confess that he chipped in now and then — but only when it worked in his favour. “I did muck in for certain things, like my dad’s car — to clean his car and polish his car. Myself and my brother Fran, that was in our own interest,” he said.

The motivation? A chance to get behind the wheel. “We realised we’d say that we cleaned your car and dried it off… or whatever it happened to be. So that got us driving. So it suited us from that point of view.”

Eamonn’s comments offered a rare personal glimpse into his family life growing up in Belfast and highlighted the changing attitudes toward chores and expectations at home. While many parents today encourage kids to pitch in, it’s clear that things were a bit different in the Holmes household back in the day — something he now looks back on with a mix of humour and heartfelt reflection.
