Eagles fume over players' nightclub visit

COVID-hit coach Adam Simpson is fuming after some of his players disobeyed West Coast's guidelines by visiting a local nightclub during the peak of the virus in WA.

The Eagles released a statement on Friday saying they have been made aware that some players went to a Leederville nightclub last Saturday.

Photos have since emerged of defenders Jackson Nelson and Josh Rotham in attendance just a day after West Coast suffered a 109-point loss to Richmond.

West Coast are investigating the breach, which was made by an unidentified number of players.

"I am furious and disappointed with the actions of these players," Simpson said in a club statement.

Rotham has been recalled for Saturday night's clash with Brisbane at the Gabba, but Nelson is one of eight West Coast players in the health and safety protocols.

Simpson is also unavailable after testing positive to COVID-19.

The Eagles have named top-up player Jake Florenca for his AFL debut.

Three other top-up players have been named as emergencies.

It is the second time this season West Coast have had to call on supplementary list players.

WA recorded 10,182 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday - the first time the state had recorded more than 10,000 cases in a day.

"Given the current environment and the peak in COVID-19 cases in Perth the club is devastated that some players opted to go out publicly as they have done," West Coast said in a statement.

"The club has gone to great lengths in educating the players around the need to adhere to club guidelines and it is beyond disappointing that they have put themselves in this situation.

"It is particularly disheartening given the strain on player availability at this stage of the season.

"At the earliest opportunity the club will meet with the players concerned."

Last week's debutant Greg Clark, defender Alex Witherden and ruckman Luke Strnadica have been forced out of West Coast's side after entering the health and safety protocols.

Captain Luke Shuey (hamstring), Willie Rioli (hamstring), and Xavier O'Neill (knee) are out injured, while Hugh Dixon was dropped.

Defender Tom Barrass returns from a hamstring injury, and is joined in the team by Luke Foley, Jamaine Jones, Callum Jamieson, Isiah Winder, Rotham, and Florenca.

Brisbane lost Joe Daniher (shoulder) and Darcy Gardiner (health and safety protocols).

They have been replaced by Ryan Lester and Jack Payne.
