Get ready to see the iconic kelly green uniforms inside Lincoln Financial Field in the 2023 NFL season.
The Eagles’ Instagram account posted a photo of quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver DeVonta Smith saying that the alternate uniforms would return next season. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday that the franchise is slated to make a formal announcement about the return of the uniforms once the NFL has released the 2023 schedule in May.
The uniforms were worn until 1996 when Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie purchased the team and changed the franchise’s uniform and helmet color to a midnight green. Philadelphia has been working to bring back the classic since the NFL’s 2018 decision allowing teams to wear alternative uniforms. Though the league restricted the number of helmets that could be worn, the Eagles continued to advocate for a second helmet—a push that was finally approved on in June 2021, per The Inquirer.
Prior to the 2023 return, the getup was worn during the ’10 season opener to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1960 NFL championship.
