Looks like Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin have to update that relationship status: the couple has officially confirmed their engagement in June 2023—nine months after she said "yes."
While the likes of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello or MGK and Megan Fox keep us speculating where romance is concerned, Dylan and Barbara are one solid pair that we can always count on for stability, happiness and utter cuteness. The only thing we were curious about is why it took so long for the two to let the public in on this giant milestone. In an interview with V Magazine, the spouses-to-be (or Sprouses-to-be!) revealed that they had wanted to have control over their story and how the world learned about their next steps.
"We didn’t necessarily feel the need to be fully transparent with the public about that aspect of our engagement. What we wanted to do with Stephen [Gan, V's editor-in-chief] and the V team is make something that was kind of tongue-in-cheek about the nature of private versus public," Sprouse told the outlet.
Palvin chimed in: "Also, we just want to do it on our time."
While there are plenty of exciting moments ahead for the couple, including their upcoming nuptials in Palvin's native Hungary, let's revisit how it all began between Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin.
Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin's relationship timeline
From supporting one another's career achievements—her Victoria's Secret shows, his publishing a comic book—to staying in to watch anime, Palvin and Sprouse have been going strong for roughly five years. We can't wait to see what the future has in store for the model and actor!
2017: The first meeting
The two crossed paths at a Harper's Bazaar party in 2017 and immediately took comedic jabs at one another.
"I think the thing that really drew us together was our mutual roasting of each other when we first met," Sprouse told V. "That was something that left a lasting impression."
It wasn't enough in the moment, though, as the two didn't communicate until several months later and Palvin actually ignored his D.M. post-party.
2018: The trip to China
Palvin confessed she wasn't in the headspace to begin something new in 2017, but nearly a year later, things began to change. Sprouse was en route to China to film a movie and confessed to his team that he regretted not taking the time to get to know Barbara before heading to the other side of the world.
Like fate, Barbara knew it was time to get in touch.
"My manager was with me and asked, ‘Dylan, is there anything you wish you had wrapped up before you left?’” he told W Magazine. “And for the first time in six months, Barbara popped in my head, and I thought, ‘I wish I had time to take this girl on a date’. Ten minutes later, Barbara texts me for the first time in six months.”
And, oddly enough, Palvin was scheduled to work on a campaign in China just as Sprouse was shooting. Talk about a coincidence, right?! Unfortunately, her work plans fell through, yet she still made the trip to China and from there, the rest is relationship history!
2019: The move to New York
Though the couple currently calls L.A. home and will venture back to Palvin's native Hungary for their big day, they moved in together in 2019 in Brooklyn, New York.
At home in 2020
Along with the entire world, the two were forced to take a break and stay in during the pandemic. Palvin jokingly photographed a few moments of them at home staying cozy (and bingeing anime, no doubt).
2021: They venture to Hungary
In 2021, we catch a few Instagram posts from Barbara in her homeland with her fella by her side. He's looking forward to both of their families meeting in the European country and taking part in a traditional wedding ceremony.
"It’s gonna be a big event, with both of our parents meeting for the first time,
too," Sprouse told V. "I think it’s exciting for me, not only because I love the kind of historical traditions of the event, but because, Cole, we came from a very small family unit. Barbara, on the other hand, has quite a large family unit. They look at her like their princess and I think it’s going to be a really special moment to see them all reacting to that amidst their traditions."
2022: They promise each other forever
"I think the engagement stressed me more than the wedding," Palvin told V. "I mean, a man has time to prepare for the proposal—Dylan kept the ring for seven months before he asked the question—but for me, it was right then and there. I knew since we started dating that I want to marry him, but it’s a big decision."
