Dylan McGowan: Hamilton Accies haven't been good enough up top and that must change if we are to stay up

Hamilton Accies captain Dylan McGowan admits they have not been good enough in forward areas and that must improve on Saturday if they are to avoid relegation.

The New Douglas Park side are clinging on to their Championship status after a 1-0 defeat to League One part-timers Alloa in Tuesday night’s Championship play-off semi-final first leg.

That has left McGowan’s side needing at least two goals in Saturday’s second leg to turn the game around and book a place in next week’s final, which is likely to be against Lanarkshire rivals Airdrie after their 6-2 thumping of Falkirk in the other tie.

Accies hit the woodwork and spurned a couple of good chances in the first half to leave Clackmannanshire empty-handed.

McGowan believes Accies have the quality to pull off a comeback against Brian Rice’s side, but knows they must bring their shooting boots.

He said: “It’s not ideal but we are taking a team back to our place now, in front of our own fans. I’m sure they will get behind us in numbers.

“At times, when we’ve really needed a performance this season we’ve shown it, so I’m confident that we can get through.

“We knew it was never going to be easy coming here. Obviously we wanted to win the game, but it’s a case of it only being half-time in the tie and now we have the home fans and home pitch advantage so we are looking forward to that.

“In the forward areas we have been unfortunate but we’ve also not been good enough.

“We need to own that as well. Luck has not been on our side in terms of in front of goal, so we will be looking to change that.

“We will be going for the win. We will put numbers in the box and I’m sure the forward players will have the bit between their teeth to go out and make amends.”

Luke Donnelly grabbed the only goal of the game when he came off the bench for midfielder Adam King, who collapsed off the ball midway through the first half and was stretchered off.

On the match itself, McGowan added: “I think it was a pretty even game. I think if it finishes 1-1 or 0-0 I think both sets of players and managers would say that’s probably fair enough.

“But we knew we wouldn’t be coming up and finishing the tie here so we are confident we will put on a performance.”
