Jamie McGrath can’t wait to watch Dylan Levitt at the World Cup because he reckons his abilities are simply jaw-dropping.
Playmaker Levitt was named in Rob Page’s squad for Qatar and his Dundee United team-mate knows he has all the abilities to be a Welsh wizard. Wales have England, Iran and USA in their World Cup section and McGrath is in no doubt the 21-year-old can be a game changer in Group B.
McGrath, who has also been called up by the Republic of Ireland for their friendlies with Norway and Malta later this month, said: “He is a great lad and what a player as well. It has been a tough time for us but he always shows his quality. Even in training, some of the things he does are jaw-dropping. He is still young, you have to remember that, so there will be ups and downs. It is going to be some experience for him and I am look forward to watching him.”
Levitt isn’t the only United star who will be in Qatar, as defender Aziz Behich has also been called up by Australia. They have one more game, away to Aberdeen tomorrow, to navigate before they can concentrate on the World Cup.
McGrath watched the pair help United smash Kilmarnock 4-0 in midweek and he knows neither of them have taken their eye off the domestic ball. The Irishman said: “You wouldn’t know they were going. You would know they are just casually going to a World Cup!
“It is a phenomenal achievement and it shows the professionalism of both of them. Like I say, I am looking forward to watching them.”
The midweek win for the team in tangerine was massive as it took them off the bottom of the Premiership. McGrath joined Levitt in getting on the scoresheet. Head coach Liam Fox is looking for his team to build on things at Pittodrie, to make sure they keep themselves off the trap door going into the World Cup break.
“We knew we were due a big performance and thankfully it came through,” McGrath said. “We had a win and then backed it up with another big win a few weeks ago but things didn’t quite go to plan after that. We have to go up to Aberdeen now and put in a big shift.”
Aberdeen are sure to come out with a point to prove after being thumped 4-0 at Tannadice last time out. There is also an added bit of spice for McGrath as his ex-boss Jim Goodwin tried to take him to the Dons before United sealed the deal in the summer window.
McGrath said: “Like I say, we can only focus on ourselves. We have the confidence from the win on Wednesday. Pittodrie is tough to go to and I am sure there will be fans from both sides there that can spur us on.”
