DWP warning as people asked to submit passports

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning as it may ask for proof of identification when dealing with customers.

The government department is responsible for distributing benefits and handling pensions, among other things. On Tuesday, a tweet from the DWP's official account urged people to be vigilant.

DWP said: "Be fraud aware and protect your personal details at all times Your information could be used by criminals to commit benefit and other fraud".

In the tweet, a video told social media users: "DWP may ask you to submit ID such as your passport. We will always add a message to your journal to prove it is us.

"Your information can be used by criminals to commit benefit and other fraud. If you believe you have been targeted, contact Action Fraud."

It comes after an earlier warning as scammers were said to be "targeting people about #CostOfLiving Payments". The DWP reminded people that if they are eligible for a payment, they do not need to apply for it as the money will arrive in their bank account automatically.

If you think you are being targeted by a fraudster, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
