DWP Universal Credit change will see over 100,000 claimants pressured to get a job

New Universal Credit rules coming into effect in September will see thousands of claimants pressured to find work.

For those applying for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit, the Administration Earnings Threshold (AET) refers to the minimum amount you need to be earning to avoid being placed into the Intensive Work Search regime.

Claimants that earn less than this threshold, including those with a health condition that does not impede their ability to work, are required to go to mandatory face-to-face work search reviews.

After the AET increases in September, approximately 114,000 claimants will be forced into the Intensive Work Search programme. This means they will have to attend the weekly or bi-weekly appointments at their local job centre.

As reported by Lancs Live, the DWP has revealed that the AET will increase from £355 to £494 a month for individual claimants, and from £567 to £782 a month for couples.

According to the Work and Pensions Secretary Thérèse Coffey, the increase will "help claimants get quickly back into the world of work while helping ensure employers get the people they and the economy needs".
