The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has shared an update on when households will get the £400 discount on their energy bills.
Millions of people across Scotland and the UK on a low income will receive £1,200 in total from the government to help with cost of living crisis, while all domestic electricity customers will get £400 off of their energy bills. The energy bill discount will be distributed between October 2022 and March 2023.
Approximately 29 million households throughout the UK will receive financial support through the Energy Bills Support Scheme. The discount will be applied automatically, meaning that you do not need to apply for it.

The £400 discount will be distributed by providers to make sure households receive the financial aid they need throughout the winter months as energy usage increases.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the rebate will be issued through methods, dependent on how much you pay for your energy usage. These include:
- Direct debit: The discount will be automatically applied to the monthly direct debit collected or in the form of a refund to the customer's bank account each month.
- Standard credit/payment card: The discount will be applied automatically as a credit to standard credit customers accounts in the first week of each month.
- Smart prepayment meters: The discount will be credited directly to meters in the first week of each month.
- Traditional prepayment meters: The discount will be provided via redeemable vouchers or Special Action Messages issued via SMS text, email or post.
Meanwhile, the second instalment of the £650 cost of living payment will be issued this autumn, though an official date has not been set.
