DWP PIP being replaced in North and South Lanarkshire with new benefit this month

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be replaced by a new disability benefit for new claimants in South Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire this month.

Adult Disability Payment (ADP) launched earlier this year in Dundee City, Perth and Kinross and the Western Isles.

From June 20, people in North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire — as well as Angus — who have a long-term disability or health condition will be able to apply for the new Social Security Scotland-delivered benefit.

As reported by the Daily Record, over 305,000 people in Scotland who already claim the benefits will be moved over from the DWP benefit to ADP starting from August 29.

Read on for a full summary of Adult Disability Payment, including who is eligible, and how much it is worth.

What is Adult Disability Payment?

ADP is a benefit that provides financial assistance to those with a disability or long-term physical or mental health conditions that affects their day-to-day life.

Similarly to PIP, it consists of two elements — a Daily Living component and a Mobility component.

Claimants may qualify for one or both of these components, with the amount they receive depending on how their condition affects how they complete everyday activities and move around.

Whether you are in work or not is not taken into account, and neither are your savings or income.

Daily Living component

If you require help with any of the following tasks you may qualify for the Daily Living component:

  • preparing food
  • taking nutrition (eating and drinking)
  • managing therapy or monitoring a health condition
  • washing and bathing
  • managing toilet needs or incontinence
  • dressing and undressing
  • communicating verbally
  • reading and understanding signs, symbols and words
  • engaging socially with other people face to face
  • making budgeting decisions

Those who receive the Daily Living component will be given £61.85 per week for a standard award or £92.40 per week for an enhanced reward.

Claimants who are terminally ill will receive the enhanced award by default.

Mobility component

If you require help getting around or with planning and following a journey, you may receive the Mobility component.

This is worth £24.45 per week for the standard award and £64.50 per week for the enhanced award.

Additionally, if you qualify for the enhanced award, you can also apply to lease an accessible vehicle.

How will Adult Disability Payment be paid?

ADP is normally paid every four weeks, though if you are terminally you will receive it every week.

It will be transferred directly to your bank, building society or credit union account.

Who can apply for Adult Disability Payment?

If you already claim PIP or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) from the DWP you do not need to apply for ADP, as Social Security Scotland will automatically move you over to the new benefit.

You can learn more about the transfer from the DWP to Social Security Scotland here.

You may be eligible for ADP if you have a disability or long-term physical or mental health condition, or are terminally ill.

In order to qualify, you must also be over 18 and under the State Pension age.

When can you apply?

ADP is being rolled out gradually this year across Scottish council areas.

New claimants will be able to apply for ADP on or after:

  • Now: if they live in Dundee City, Perth and Kinross or the Western Isles
  • June 20: if they live in Angus, North Lanarkshire or South Lanarkshire
  • July 25: if they live in Fife, Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray, North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire or South Ayrshire
  • August 29: if they live elsewhere in Scotland

Check online if you qualify for Adult Disability Payment

You can check online to see if you may qualify for ADP before starting a claim using this online tool.

The checker will ask you for information such as where you live, your age, and whether you are on any other benefits.

If you do not qualify for Adult Disability Payment, the Social Security Scotland tool will tell you what other benefits you may be able to claim.
