The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to millions of Brits who are getting ready to receive the next wave of Cost of Living payments.
The payments are intended to help vulnerable households face the brunt of the worsening cost of living crisis sweeping across the country which has been fuelled by rising energy bills and cost of goods. Roughly eight million or so homeowners will receive the first part of the £900 payment package in Spring - the first instalment will come in at £301.
This will then be followed by another payment in the summer, the £150 disability cost of living payment, which will be handed out to six million people across the country. A further means-tested payment of £300 and the pensioner cost of living payment worth £300 will be issued in the autumn.
Meanwhile, the final payment of £299 in Spring of 2024 will be issued. However, the DWP has issued an urgent warning on social media for those expecting the payments over the coming months.
The government agency has reminded people that they will automatically be paid if they are eligible for the payment, and therefore will not need to apply. In a Social media post, the DWP highlighted that they will never ask individuals for personal details in a text message or email.
DWP posted: “Watch out for scammers targeting people about #CostOfLiving Payments
“If you're eligible
- You do not need to apply for the payment
- You do not need to call us
- Payment to you is automatic
- We will never ask for personal details by SMS or email.”
The new social media warning reiterates the guidance on the official Cost of Living Payments page on GOV.UK. The guidance states: “You may be able to get a payment to help with the cost of living if you’re getting certain benefits or Tax Credits.
