DWP issues update on £400 cost of living energy bill payment for 2023

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an update regarding the cost of living energy bill payment, worth £400, for 2023.

As the cost of living crisis continues to grip the UK, the Government confirmed that they would be issuing an energy bill payment, reports MyLondon. This payment, currently being delivered in monthly instalments of £67, is to help every household with their rising gas and electricity costs.

However, the DWP have now confirmed that this £400 payment given to every home will not be repeated in the winter of 2023. However, Martin Lewis has outlined the cost of living payments that will be available to households this year.

According to the Money Saving Expert website, three new payments will be made available to certain claimants in 2023, and will automatically be paid out to bank accounts to those who are eligible.

The first payment is an estimated £900 to be delivered to eight million households who claim means-tested benefits. It will be paid in three instalments, outlined here:

  • £301 during the spring - after April 6 when the new financial year has begun

  • £300 during the autumn, around October and November

  • £299 in the following spring in 2024, before April 6 and the start of the new financial year

Although the Government is yet to state if there will be a 'qualifying period' for the payment, anybody who claims the following benefits may be eligible:

  • Child or working tax credits
  • Income-based jobseeker's allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Income support
  • Pension credit
  • Universal credit

A qualifying period is a period of time, usually a week, where you must have been on these benefits to qualify for the support. Those on disability benefits are set to receive a £150 cost of living support payment in the summer of 2023

State pensioners will be expecting an extra £300 payment in the winter of 2023. However, the £400 cost of living winter payment seen this year will not be carried into 2023.
