DWP issues 10 day warning to those on Pension Credit over £301 cost of living payment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an urgent reminder to people as first cost of living payment window approaches its end.

The government department said that claimants have until May 19 to claim their Pension Credit and have the opportunity to qualify for the cost of living payment. Pension Credit claims can be backdated for up to three months, if done so before the DWP's deadline, a claimant will become automatically eligible for the £301 payment.

The benefit is designed to help those over the State Pension age with daily costs by providing a top-up to their income. Furthermore, claimants do not need to be receiving the State Pension in order to be eligible.

Minister for Pensions Laura Trott said: “Pension Credit can make a real difference and I am determined to make sure this support – worth an average of £3,500 a year – is reaching everyone who needs it, particularly as we know how much pressure households across the country have been under.

“Please check if you or your loved ones can claim for this extra support, and if you do it by 19 May you could qualify for the £301 Cost of Living Payment – giving another financial boost to those who need it most.”

Claimants can apply for Pension Credit online via the government website here.
