The DWP has issued an update on when millions of people will receive their second cost of living payment. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is due to deliver £324 to households across the UK in the autumn, the second instalment of its £650 payment being given to those who have been hardest hit by the cost of living crisis.
More than 7.2 million households received the first payment for £326 last month and a further one million families claiming tax credits will receive the financial support from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in September, reports the Daily Record. The payments were distributed between July 14 and 31 to those on means-tested benefits, though some had their payments delayed while others missed out altogether. Read why you might miss out on the payments here.
The DWP had previously said it would be giving out the second payment in the autumn, but had not given any further information. However, they've now given an update on when those who are eligible can expect to receive the money by.

An update on the DWP website said the "second payment will be no later than October 31, 2022 to be specified by the secretary of state in regulations." The news will come as a relief for millions of people amid rising costs of living, including grim forecasts that energy bills - which already rose 54% in April - could be more than £5,000 a year by April next year. You can read more about that here.
No qualifying period for the second payment has been released yet, so it’s unclear if the dates have passed or if they are still to come. The latest guidance also highlights that DWP is using a computer program to identify eligible claimants for the cost of living payments.
It states: “There is no claims process for persons to follow to claim the additional payments. The payments will be paid into the bank account where claimants normally receive benefits or by the claimant’s preferred alternative arrangements where applicable.”
You may be eligible for the two cost of living payments if you receive any of the following:
- Universal credit
- Income-based Jobseeker’s allowance (JSA)
- Income-related employment and support allowance (ESA)
- Income support
- Pension credit
- Child tax credit
- Working tax credit
If you have a joint claim with a partner, you will get one payment of £326 and one payment of £324 for your joint claim - if you are eligible. To get the latest money news straight to your inbox, subscribe to our dedicated newsletter here.
