DWP error means 160,000 benefit claimants could be owed thousands of pounds

Thousands of pounds in backpay could be owed to over 160,000 UK benefit claimants after an error in calculations. After contacting the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to recalculate his PIP payments, one man was awarded £12,000

As a result to changes to PIP calculations, thousands of claimants could be owed money. According to the latest figures show the government has forked out £42 million in 8,200 payments, reports BirminghamLive.

The DWP estimates that as many as 164,000 claimants could be impacted. Meanwhile, Citizens Advice says claimants can ask the DWP to look again if they have a mental health condition that makes going outside difficult.

People can also contact the DWP if they didn’t get the mobility component of PIP or if they got the standard rate of the mobility component. In all there are around 20 conditions which successful claimants have suffered from.

As well as agoraphobia, these include alcohol misuse and also anxiety and depressive disorders. Anxiety disorders are also included, as is autism, bipolar affective disorder (Hypomania / Mania) and also some cognitive disorders.

On the list is also dementia and depressive disorder, as well as drug misuse and learning disability. There is also mood disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and also panic disorder.

Personality disorders, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are also included, as are psychotic disorders and schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia and also stress reaction disorders.
