People claiming benefits such as Universal Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) could see their benefits stopped if they have to go into hospital.
Millions of people across the UK receive additional support from the government department, and this can be a lifeline for those out of work or on a low income, providing crucial financial support to cope with daily living costs.
Disability benefits including Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Attendance Allowance, can help people mitigate the extra costs of living with a long-term illness or health condition. Their regular payment can help pay for taxis, additional equipment, mobility scooters, wheelchairs and even a Motability vehicle, the Daily Record reports.

However, there are several reasons why DWP may reduce, pause or even stop someone’s benefit claim, including a stay in hospital. Even if you are in a medical facility for just one night, if you fail to tell the correct benefit department about it, you could see your payments reduced or stopped.
The DWP has provided guidance here on what claimants need to do if they are admitted to hospital and will miss a Jobcentre Plus appointment. However, they also have a warning which states: “Your claim might be stopped or reduced if you do not report a hospital stay.”
DWP guidance states that you must tell the office that pays your benefit as soon as possible if you:
- go into hospital for one night or longer
- go into a care home or rehabilitation centre for one night or longer
- will miss a Jobcentre Plus appointment because you’re in hospital or have a medical appointment
If you are unable to contact the relevant department yourself, DWP says that a friend or relative can call them for you.
