DWP confirms Christmas benefit payment dates as changes set in place

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have confirmed the benefit payment date changes in time for Christmas, as many gear up for an expensive festive season.

Millions of people on DWP benefits were due to receive their money on December 26, December 27 and December 28 this year. However, these payments will be scheduled earlier than normal this year, to account for the Boxing Day and other bank holidays.

Benefit claimants can expect their payments to land into bank accounts by Friday, December 23 2022. Typically, if your payment date lands on a weekend or a bank holiday, you'll be paid on the working day before.

The payment date of Friday, December 23 is in place for most benefits, aside from those claiming Tax Credits in the UK.

People in Scotland due Tax Credits on Thursday, December 29 will see this payment moved forward to Wednesday, December 28. If you are due payments on Monday January 2, or Tuesday, January 3, then you will receive this on Friday, December 23.

There are two types of Tax Credit - Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit. Claimants can choose to receive their payments either weekly or every four weeks.

If your payment is late, check the payment date on your award notice and contact your bank before calling HMRC.

In terms of Child Benefit, this will also be paid early:

  • If your payment was due on December 27 or December 28, it will typically be paid on December 24.
  • If your payment was due on January 3, 2023, it will typically be paid on December 31, 2022.

However, for those living in Scotland, HMRC will issue your payment on the normal date, but your bank may not process it straight away. Check with your bank for the date you’ll get your payment.
