DWP confirm Cost of Living Payment dates for people receiving tax credits

As energy prices are set to soar again, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the dates for when people receiving tax credits will be paid the first half of the £650 Cost of Living payment.

Those who receive benefits such as Universal Credit or Income-based JSA, should have got the Cost of Living payments by the end of July whereas those who receive Tax Credit will have to wait a little longer.

The DWP have confirmed that the first half of the Cost of Living Payments will go out to most people on Tax Credit in September 2022. However there are some exceptions and the Government has not yet set the date of the second instalment of £324.

According to DWP, the second instalment will be given out 'in Winter'.

The Cost of Living Payments are being handed out in instalments with £326 being received in September to those on Tax Credits.

Claimants have also been warned that if they receive the payment, then they are later found not to be eligible, they will have to pay it back.

To get the first instalment of the Cost of Living payment, you must have been entitled, or later found to be entitled, to tax credits for any day in the period 26 April 2022 to 25 May 2022, rather than receiving a payment between those dates.

If you get both Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit, you will only receive a payment for Child Tax Credit only. Meanwhile, if you get tax credits from HMRC and a low income benefit from DWP, you will get a Cost of Living Payment from DWP only.

However, if you change the account your tax credits are paid into, you may receive your payment later. DWP stress that you will still get the payment regardless and you do not need to contact DWP or HMRC.

DWP and HMRC are using a computer program to identify those eligible to receive a Cost of Living Payment. If you strongly think the system won't flag you but think you are still entitled, you can contact the office that pays your benefit or tax credits to discuss it.
